What is Grief and Loss?

Grief and loss are deeply personal and complex emotional responses to significant changes or losses in a person’s life. These feelings arise not only from the death of a loved one but also from other types of losses that alter a person’s sense of normalcy, security, or identity.

Types of Grief and Loss

  • Death: Loss of a family member, friend, pet, or significant other.
  • Relationship Loss: Breakups, divorce, or estrangement.
  • Health Loss: Chronic illness, disability, or loss of physical/mental capabilities.
  • Career/Financial Loss: Job termination, financial instability, or bankruptcy.
  • Identity Loss: Losing a sense of purpose, status, or role (e.g., retirement or becoming an empty nester).
  • Environmental Loss: Relocation, migration, or natural disasters.
  • Anticipatory Grief: Grieving a loss before it occurs, such as a terminal diagnosis.
  • Ambiguous Loss: Unresolved or unclear losses, like a missing person or a loved one with dementia.

When to seek help

  • Persistent inability to function in daily life.
  • Intense longing or preoccupation with the loss for an extended period.
  • Feelings of hopelessness or thoughts of self-harm.
  • Difficulty connecting with others or adjusting to life after the loss.
